1902bAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholics take position on Australia Day

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Commission (NATSICC) has called for a reconsideration of the date the nation celebrates Australia Day. 'The 26th of January 1788 was not a day of celebration for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people nor was it for the passengers upon the first fleet - a mix of prisoners and military personnel. Following the funding blow, ACRATH (Australian Catholic Religious Against Trafficking in Humans) launched a national fundraising campaign and has been overwhelmed with the response. ACRATH’s executive officer Christine Carolan said the organisation is grateful for the support and the generosity of people, especially religious groups, who responded so willingly to the appeal.  ... see more News items

1902fMon 4 Feb - 1939 walk-off by Aboriginal people from Cumeragunja Mission

In 1939 around 150 people walked off the Cummeragunja Mission on the NSW-Victorian border, in what was the first Indigenous mass protest in Australia. The action was a protest against living conditions and restrictions. The walk-off inspired Indigenous people across Australia and has been seen as the spark that ignited an Indigenous movement which has since fought for basic rights for Indigenous Australians, such as the right to vote.  ... see more Diary items
