RELIGIOUS MINORITIES: ACSJC WRITES TO PAKISTAN'S MILITARY LEADER

ACSJC Chairman Bishop Kevin Manning, has written to Pakistan's Chief Executive, General Pervaiz Musharaf, urging him to act more decisively to protect religious minorities.
He said: "The system of Separate Electorates appears to have created and reinforced divisions among the citizens of Pakistan encouraging religious bigotry and restricting the voting choices of all citizens, Muslims and members of religious minorities alike.  This system would also appear to violate Article 25 of the Constitution of Pakistan, which guarantees equal rights to all citizens.
"Religious minorities in Pakistan acknowledge the positive and constructive steps being taken by your Government and are encouraged by the recommendation of the Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan regarding the restoration of a Joint Electorate System as envisaged in the Representation of Peoples Act 1976.  It is felt that this would be a significant step in building up national unity and undoing the bitterness of past division."
"We have always contributed to development and building the nation, and I personally believe that minorities would be able to do more in nation building if only their belittled status as citizens is restored. I expect that your Excellency will soon make an announcement to remove doubts and to revive confidence, and due placement of the minority communities in the scheme of devolution of power."
